![]() We also see a gradual concentration of previously dispersed populations into a few relatively large communities structured around the central platform mounds. After this period, most people were buried as extended inhumations, often with one or more vessels (possibly containing food) and other personal belongings such as jewelry and their tools. Prior to 1200 CE, most Hohokam were cremated and their ashes gathered up, placed into a ceramic vessel, and buried. There were also changes in how people buried their dead and in the kinds of objects that were placed in the burial. By 1100 CE the use of the ball courts ends among the Hohokam. Restricting access to the rituals conducted within the compound created a formal social distinction that was not apparent earlier.Īt the time of these changes in the social and ritual lives of these communities, there were a number of other significant cultural changes underway. The enclosing wall likely marks a significant change in the relationship between the community’s leaders and the general populace. These enclosed mounds are distinctive in that they were not capped trash mounds, but specially constructed platforms with formal architectural features. 1000, when fenced enclosures were built around the mounds. Archaeologists have identified a change in this arrangement at about A.D. No structures were built atop these mounds, so it seems that the activities were conducted in the open for all of the community to witness. ![]() The earliest of these were trash mounds that had a plaster coating applied over them to create a hard surface. ![]() In some of the larger sites, there also developed a system of platform mounds that appear to have served in public ceremonies. These ball games probably integrated communities into a larger social system that may have extended as far north as the Verde Valley and Flagstaff regions, and as far south as the Tucson area. While we do not know the specifics of the Hohokam ball game, there are descriptions of contests from central Mexico and Mayan regions, and variations of the game are played today throughout Central America. The ball game tradition is well documented in Mesoamerica-the region of complex civilizations in central Mexico and further south into Guatemala and Honduras. These are believed to have been courts for playing a ball game. Initially, larger communities featured ritual or ceremonial architecture in the form of large, open, oval-shaped depressions excavated into the ground surface, with soil mounded along the sides to create berms. 1150 to 1200, there was a shift towards surface structures with freestanding adobe walls that were often enclosed within a walled compound. The superstructure was made of branches and brush that were anchored to a center framework of large timbers, and covered with adobe mud plaster. Archaeologists refer to these as “pit houses” or “houses in pit” depending on the nature of the construction. At first, the houses were individual structures constructed within or around a shallow depression excavated into the earth. Larger villages were organized around a central plaza with ceremonial structures. Hohokam settlements varied in size from small, single family farmsteads to large villages of several hundred people. The core-or heart-of the agave plant was also roasted in large hornos (pit ovens) and eaten. In some areas, agave was particularly important and was cultivated and harvested for the fibers in its leaves, which were processed to make thread and woven cloth. Hallmarks include brown or buff-colored pottery decorated with reddish, ochre (hematite)-based paint a highly developed tradition of shell jewelry manufacturing that included carved pendants a growing a variety of crops, including maize (corn), various beans, squashes, and cotton, which were often irrigated by a complex system of canals and reservoirs as well as the collection of many wild plants, including mesquites, cactus buds, grass seeds, and agave. In the Sonoran Desert regions of southern Arizona, researchers call this developing tradition the “Hohokam” culture. 450-1150 CEĪrchaeologists do not, of course, know what these people called themselves, or how they viewed their community and ties with other settlements in the surrounding regions.

He also fails to communicate with his girlfriend Susan, who breaks up with him and takes a job of her own, moving away from the city. He struggles with both, lacking a crucial song in his musical that he needs for the approaching workshop, and drifting away from his best friend, Michael, who is diagnosed with AIDS in the third act. Throughout the musical, Larson fixates on how to achieve success-whether it be in his startup musical Superbia or in his close relationships. Tick, Tick… Boom! is an autobiography of anxieties. The stress of his upcoming birthday that he associates with a lack of success as a theatrical composer weighs on him throughout the movie. The movie opens with Larson at the piano, ranting about the upcoming doom of his thirtieth birthday, leading into the song “30/90” – which has recently been blowing up on TikTok. He is scatterbrained and utterly devoted to his writing, a trait that causes him to alienate his loved ones in times of need. In addition to his physical similarities to Larson, Garfield flawlessly portrays the personality of the aspiring playwright. Even Larson’s friend Micheal (Robin de Jesús) and girlfriend Susan (Alexandra Shipp) had similarities to their characters as well. This perfect casting by Bernard Telsey was one of the things that really stood out to me as I watched this adaptation. If you look at two pictures of Garfield and Larson side by side, their images are strikingly similar. After composing for and producing various movies, he was drawn to the idea of telling the story of a fellow playwright.Īs I watched the adaptation, I was amazed by the beautifully incorporated music written by Larson himself, as well as the fantastic castings.Īndrew Garfield delivers a Golden Globe-winning performance as Jonathan Larson. Lin Manuel-Miranda, creator of Hamilton, saw Rent at seventeen, one year after its release on Broadway. ![]() Little did he know that a superbly popular member of his species would be telling his story roughly thirty years later. Larson introduces himself in the adaptation as “a musical theater writer, one of the last of my species,”. The adaptation of Larson’s second musical follows the story of the nearly thirty-year-old writer and tells unknown details of his childhood and close friendships. This monologue gave birth to Tick, Tick…Boom! One thing led to another, and Rent was born in 1996, just after Larson passed. The flop of the startup musical led to a monologue, an “intense, angry solo,” Anthony Tommasini, a music critic, said in a 1996 New York Times interview. Superbia was based on George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984”-although he was denied the rights. Larson loved to base many of his musicals off of others, or based on his own life. And finally, Miranda created another masterpiece: a movie adaptation of Larson’s life, in the form of Tick, Tick…Boom! Then came “Rent,” his musical about friendships and about writing musicals (how familiar). In addition to Rent, Larson left behind another, lesser-known musical: Tick, Tick… Boom!, an angst-filled, semi-autobiographical story of being a playwright in New York.īefore I knew anything about Larson, it was awfully hard to distinguish his never-produced musical, Superbia, from Tick, Tick…Boom!, which is Larson’s story of writing Superbia. Larson passed away at 35 from a sudden aortic aneurysm the night before the musical’s opening. Larson left behind what I think of as one of the best musicals of all time: Rent, the iconic rock musical focusing on New York City during the height of the HIV epidemic. Most of his time was spent just getting by as a writer who could barely afford New York life. Larson wasn’t well known for most of his lifetime. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directing debut Tick, Tick… Boom! tells the story of the theatrical composer who inspired his own creativity: Jonathan Larson, creator of the hit musical, Rent. ![]() The time loop in Deathloop is not strictly timed and is aimed to give players more time and freedom to take out these eight targets in one loop. Can’t look this up either, as every day, the code changes, and you’ll have to find it within the mansion each time to get it right. In one, for instance, you need to input a code into a music booth to get a target to reveal themselves. This also becomes true for other missions later in the game. You can, however, look up where to find the location of the codes. So if you look up guides claiming to have X or Y code, it won’t work. This means you actually have to track down the information in the game and there are no shortcuts. In order to prevent people from simply copying down all the secret codes for doors and safes in the game, Deathloop actually generates these for each individual game, so yours will be unique compared to other people’s. You Cannot Google Locked Door Or Safe CodesĪlright, this one is kind of hilarious. So while this is an option, I’m not sure I’d for sure turn PvP off. However, I would at least try to fight human Juliannas as A) it’s a lot of fun (and so is being her) and B) I find that the human ones drop better rewards if you kill them. You can change to “single player” mode where Julianna will be an AI instead, and generally speaking, easier to beat, as she’ll usually show up straight away and start shooting at you rather than bothering to sneak around. ![]() But what you can avoid is the tension of going up against other players as Julianna. So, Julianna is going to invade your maps. Enemies just don’t really seem to have a real counter to it. Hell, it’s even won me a lot of fights with Julianna. Even with an aggressive playstyle, I would highly recommend sticking to the machete a lot. It does this in silence, so areas with 3-4 enemies can be hacked to death without really sneaking all that much, and it won’t bring down reinforcements on you like gunfire will. Yes, you can use it to sneak around and assassinate people, but, it has the ability to one or two shot most enemies before they can react to seeing you at all. I don’t think that Deathloop combat is exactly “balanced,” and one thing stands out above everything else, the starter machete. ![]() If you have kids, especially teenage boys, you can count on them asking for seconds … maybe even thirds!įor a meal that only takes a few minutes of prep, this is an easy casserole packed with ingredients you can find at any grocery store. Automatic slicers include an electric motor, which moves the carriage back and forth against the blade at up to 60 slices per minute, allowing “set and forget” functionality without the need for a staff member. For high-use environments, such as in a deli or grocery store, an automatic slicer can be a both a time and forearm muscle saver. For use with larger cuts of meat or cheese, check with the manufacturer to make sure that your slicer can handle these larger products. Most used commercial meat slicers can accommodate a product size of between 7 and 12″ in diameter, within the tray or carriage. Mid-level and heavy duty slicers have blades which measure 12-14″ across, versus 9″ and 10″ for less expensive slicers. Mid-level and premium slicers typically have larger cutting blades than their economy counterparts. Higher horsepower slicers are designed for more frequent use, and have the power to handle both large pieces of meat and difficult-to-slice foods like cheese.īlade size. As a general rule of thumb, more horsepower=more slicing power. ![]() In addition to these broad categories of used commercial meat slicer technology, most models have a few other pieces of vocabulary that you’ll want to become familiar with. What Are Some Design Features to Consider in a Used Commercial Meat Slicer? These are designed for constant use (such as in a supermarket, deli, specialty butcher, or convenience store) and boast designs that feature improved safety, and better control over slice precision, speed, and productivity. Heavy-duty or premium slicers are the best model a particular manufacturer has to offer. While intended to be used mostly with deli meats or vegetables, commercial slicers in this category typically offer a few additional safety features and are designed for a few hours of use per day. Mid-level slicers tend to have larger blades, allowing you to cut larger pieces of meat or blocks of cheese, and motors with more horsepower that can stand up to more moderate use. Many of these slicers lack the ability to slice cheese, and don’t include much in the way of safety or productivity features. Here are some additional things to keep in mind, when choosing the used commercial meat slicer that’s right for you and your business:Įntry-level slicers are suitable strictly for environments where they will only see an hour or two of light use per day. ![]() ![]() ![]() This increased productivity (and fewer worker’s compensation claims) you face with a higher-end slicer generally makes up for the difference in cost fairly quickly. Heavier-duty slicers typically also include more usability and safety features, designed to keep you and your staff safe and injury-free. By buying an inexpensive, entry-level slicer, you may feel like you are saving money now, but the repair bills (not to mention frustration) that’s to come probably aren’t worth it for most businesses. However, most of these inexpensive slicers will quickly burn out with regular use, or when an overzealous prep cook tries to push the machine beyond its technical limitations, as with particularly large chunks of frozen meat, or with repeated use for cheese, which tends to work a machine pretty hard.
